You know how when you type a bar pops up along the bottom and takes up a good 10% of your screen just to show in the right hand corner whether you are typing Abc, abc or Fn? I'd really like to keep that screen space when I'm typing. (Ok, I know the bar also does typing hints, but I think I can live with out that).

Really it would be ideal if it only took the corner (didn't resize the app), was semi-transparent, and only showed if my status was not normal 'abc'. That seems a little picky though so I'd be happy if I could just get rid of the bar. If I can't get rid of it, what about resizing it? Maybe down to a size 10 font?

well, when it pops up, you can press shift+space to make it disappear, but unfortunatly anytime you type a text boxt to type(im assuming you have an N810) the onscreen keyboard will pop up if it is enabled.

The linked thread gives the answer, but just to say that I'm with you on this one - the resizing of apps when typing on the default N810 settings is kinda annoying. For me, the perfect solution would be an indicator on the keyboard area itself to know what mode you are on - e.g. a set of lights above the keyboard, or maybe lights built into the keys itself, so that you know what mode you're in. Maybe something for the next model.

The bar does a bit more than just indicate your typing (and the mode) It also displays some of the auto-complete words while you type.

Well, as suggested the bar would be better if it was semi-transparent and didnt resize your apps... I wonder why someone thought that it would be a good idea to waste valuable screen real estate with the bar instead of making it transparent...

Because the word suggestion feature takes touch-screen focus I can understand it resizing the app and not being transparent. It would be weird if semi transparent keyword suggestions blocked access to the app that was under them. For example the console has a bar along the bottom for keys not on the n810 keyboard, such as tab - which does auto-completion and I use a lot. This is a great example because what I'm specifically doing is typing a partial word (file name) and then I would want to press a button on the screen that I would not be able to if it was under some suggestions - which pop up on partial words.

(My suggestions was specifically for the Fn, Abc and abc indicator to be transparent - it could allow clicks to go through to the app since there is no reason to click that indicator.)

I can even understand the large size of the bar - when you are typing you are using fingers/thumbs and not a stylus so the words need to be sized for that use. I am exposed to a fair amount of software design issues in my Real Life.

I personally just think the value offered by the word suggestion and key indicator is not worth the cost of the screen space on this device. I am quite happy now that I have been able to turn it off, thank you to everyone with suggestions.

On a related note, I guess, does anyone know if there is a way to map a key on the keypad to <tab>? I don't have my n810 handy to stare at and figure out which key I'd like to use as <tab>, but it sure would be nice to have it somewhere on that keypad. Maybe shift or ctrl right-arrow? The on screen bar in xterm works though.

I'm quite liking the transparency idea - maybe as an icon which fades out after a short while rather than permanently on-screen. Failing that, I guess a notification area applet could be coded to show the current mode.

Given the lack of a spell checker the bar serves a substitute function but doesn't provide much if any useful help in the terminal.
