Got my n800 and what's with the earphones/headphones?

I've seen this on other brand headphones before -- one side is longer than the other and you cannot change the length by sliding something. It's a real peeve of mine, feels weird when wearing them kinda.

If I replace them I want to get one with built in mic.

The longer length is intended to run behind your neck to the far ear.

That's not so bad then. Still weird. Is it an earphone design thing? Cause I've seen it on clip-around-ear headphones.

Its not a weird design at all. In fact these days - its is the normal design - headphone cable reaching your ear looped around your neck is far easier and less messy than cables hanging straight down from the ear in front of you - which gets snagged by things in your pocket or weighs down the ear buds etc.

And with the looped around your neck design - you can take it of from the ears and let is hand down around your neck - you don't have to pocket it unlike the straight ones.

Every headphone that I've had that had uneven cables, the left one is shorter. I can get the correct ear bud into the correct ear, even in the dark. I don't like to listen to my music backwards. It may not make much of a difference in rock, but in classical I can hear the difference quite easily.

Part of the design ergonomics is done so that the the mic can be used from the long side as well.
