Cannot check update since yesterday. Either someone is on vacation again, or.......umm, too much traffic for palm Pre/iphone and torn down the universe?

I'm guessing you mean in the Application Manager. If that's correct, I can't say why you might be experiencing trouble, but my Application Manager appears to be working well. I just checked for updates, found a newer DialCentral package, and installed it.

Do you have a great many repositories enabled? I keep my list lean.

Me too. Mine works... I just snatched an update for Digi@scene out of extras.

Yup, it is NOW working. Interesting, either there is a ghost or new working schedule for maemo, off saturday MN to Sunday 10Am, will keep one eye on this.
