Hi,

yesterday I updated my N900 to 1.2 OTA.

I left the installation going by itself so it seemed to work good.
Then at reboot I got a gray screen with letters displayed as small squares, and two buttons at the bottom. I just pushed one of them, I got to the home screen, I saw the theme background, some icons from foreca weather widget, the same widget outline, but not much else; most of all, letters were displayed as squares so I really couldn't do much with the device.

Turns out the problem is that /opt wasn't mounted correctly. (rm -r /opt ; mkdir /opt ; mount /opt fixed it, but that has to be done at boot or many things fail).
That happened because I manually modified /etc/event.d/rcS-late and that didn't get updated with 1.2 upgrade.
I manually replaced it with the one another kind 1.2 user provided, and many things have been fixed. (Still no sound however, just a standard ringtone).

I noticed that many files in /etc/event.d that should have been updated with system-services still have older dates (< march 16th).
I'm thinking on the next move to completely fix it. How can I fix that files in /etc/event.d? Would it be better to reinstall the 1.2 update? Is it possible?

Short answer - I would flash your device - The wiki has all you need to flash your device quickly and easily (You can also flash your emmc too!) - it's really not as bad as it sounds - but..... i assume you may not have backed up your stuff?

I ran into this exact problem as well when updating. I would get to the PIN screen and after a few seconds it would half-switch off. The screen was black but on and nothing could be done.

I had to refllash.

I flashed from leaky to legal :P - but i would take a guess that yes, you can still use any method to update.

i think my update went wrong as well... here's what happened?

… i updated OTA yesterday …all went well until the phone restarted …then to my horror all the labels of the menus, applications, etc …basically every text of the OS (not including some of the apps i downloaded) appeared like long command strings (example: t890pl_plugin_clock_24hr …anyway you get the point) …the firmware seemed to work fine though minus the weird labels… i could access everything. so i reset the phone to its factory settings… after that everything looked normal. all my files, contacts, and all the apps were intact, nothing was deleted… and the phone with the new system update worked fine.

…my question is. should i be worried? or is everything ok already? I’m not much of a techie when it comes to these sorta things that’s why i’m asking your advice.

…i forgot to mention that while the update was downloading i got disconnected from the net twice… but the downloaded proceeded… and then before it finished downloading it gave me an “update fail” error… after which i just clicked on the update again, it picked up where t left off and continued updating.

…i don't know much about programming and stuff ...i mainly got the phone so i could be online all the time and stuff. Should I reinstall the update via the software updater (and i assume this will wipe my phones memory of all apps and stuff).? or should i just let it be since the phone seems to be working fine... all updates running smoothly?

thanks in advance guys.

hi slender. i actually thought about changing themes yesterday but i couldn't because the the "extended string" labels got in the way... i couldn't edit the desktop config because i didn't have access to the "wheel" ...i tried it now... i tried it now... and the first time i did it, the unit froze a bit and i got the "hildon home not responding" alert ...but that's probably because i rushed the system and tapped away on the screen immediately. i did it again and it seemed to switch themes a-ok.
