hello, i was wondering, since the P.R1.2 sdk is out, and the firmware update is probably around the corner, if there was any news on the front camera use, right now i've checked a couple of threads and can't find the answer i'm looking for.... i know that with "mirror" you can access it but the camera quality is pretty bad, and there's too much noise...i want to know if this is a hardware problem or if the update will be able to fix it with some better coding or something..... i also read that skype is working with symbian, so i was wondering if are there rumors that we'll get skype video call...i know there's gtalk but more people use skype... and maybe it's just me but i want my camera to work badly, i don't see the point in putting it there if they weren't planning on using it :s

AFAIK SDK users cannot test anything camera related as they just dont have the necessary hardware

As you say we know the fron camera works as there are already at least 2 applications that make use of it

I wondered if there was something wrong with my front camera, then i took it outside, try daylight or high light levels, all the noise disappeaers.

Plus you may like to check out aMSN, i use it to send video to MSN. (couldn't get audio at same time for some odd reason so used skype for that) Overall effect very good.

so, it's a coding problem? the new firmware could be able to fix it? ... is aMSN available in any of the extras repositories? ...

Not sure if it's coding or lack of light sensitivity with the front camera, but gut feeling is more gain could be applied to the exposure level if we had a control for it.

The aperture is very small, its not physically possible for it to be very light sensitive.

Can anyone else comment on why the front camera quality is highly dependant upon high light levels?

Hadn't thought about it much, just turned more lights on.

Camera is working but no official Application from Nokia which make use of it just yet. There will be in 1year time from now.. I believe that it will be.

I would have thought gain is exactly the thing that adds noise

Maybe longer exposure time instead, though that brings with it blur Hunless you hold still) and low fps

I've used the front camera to do google video chat (It works if a person initiates a video call with you). Using that system the video on the front camera looked 30x better than when I tried to run mirror. It was reasonable quality for video chat.

Here's how I did it so you can see for yourself: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...2&postcount=31

it is hardware problem. it is all the same with every small image sensor.
(e: I mean everything below aps-c so the primary camera of n900 is also included...)

there are two fixes:

1. don't live in a dark cave

2. get software to remove the noise.

doing both gets the best results.
