The following represents the kind of communication I think that Nokia should provide to its users. It is not an official communication from Nokia; I wish it was.

Dear N900 Users:

It has come to our attention that many of you have acquired a copy of what is represented as PR1.2, a widely anticipated update to the N900 firmware -- something that we have been getting ready for you.

This is not PR1.2. However, it is a version of firmware representing a stage of what we expect to release in due time. It does not represent the high standard that we expect of our finally released software, or you would already have received it from us.

We understand that you are impatiently awaiting our release of new firmware for this cutting-edge mobile computer. We regret that this substandard version of firmware has leaked. We are not responsible for the results, but in the interests of our users, we are releasing some information that will be of value to you.

We have spot-checked several copies of the unauthorized firmware that was released, and it appears to be an authentic version of the firmware distributed to our testers at one time. However, we cannot be responsible for this firmware as it has been distributed to you in a manner that is beyond our control. There may be other versions of this firmware that have features designed to snoop or otherwise hurt people who install it, and we are not responsible if they exist or are distributed.

We are posting a document summarizing the major problems with this unauthorized release as we see it. The responsibility for trying it out remains with you, but we want to help you deal with the problems we know it has.

The wisest course for you to adopt is not to try this unauthorized firmware. We are not responsible for its release. We will release better firmware as soon as possible -- but no sooner than it is safe and ready for you.

We send you our best wishes -- and wish you good luck as well.

Nokia Authority

Note: The above message is NOT from Nokia -- it represents a brief try at posting the message I wish Nokia HAD released when the unauthorized firmware leak made its way.

Nice idea, but the thread title is misleading. My first impression was that it referred to something in the wild pretending to be a Nokia press release.

Do you mind if I change the title, geneven? If so, suggestions welcome.

I appreciate your enthusiasm and passion but I really, really can't see why any company would - or even should - spend any time on something that users brought onto themselves by installing something that was apparently not an official release.

That, and I hope this gets moved into the 'big thread'
