i updated the firmware to the latest. now backup/restore can't find the backup i made before i started the update. it sees a test backup i made after the update though. the zip files and metadata are definitely on the card in a backup folder, but are unrecognized. anyone have an idea what i might do to fix this problem?
thanks.

i finally noticed the backup.metadata file did not have the little 'pin' icon and figured the file was corrupted somehow. i created a new backup (of the empty n800), then copied the new metadata file over the apparently corrupted one. the backup/restore program then 'saw' the old file and was able to do a partial restore. fortunately it restored my gpe calendar dates, but unfortunately it was not able to restore the data for email or gpe contact. if anyone has a better idea on repairing a broken backup i'd be glad to see it.

The (original) backup file should be in 'zip' format. The zip/unzip programs are not pre-installed on the N800, but can be installed from repositories. Or you can copy the file to a desktop computer. Either way you should be able to examine, and possibly extract files from the backup. I think. It's been a while since I looked at a backup..

i did add unzip and zip the the n800 and unzipped the files. when i unzipped them into the same backup folder the files were unzipped into a /media/mmc1/backups/backup/root/--/-- folder and then into a /.--- (notice the ".") folder so the 'import' facilities for each program could not find them. the calendar was the important file and it seems to have survived its scare with eradication. plus i was able to merge the contacts from the 770 so i'm only missing a few of them. anything else i can live without until i figure out how to get the remainder of the information out of the backup files. the trick of overwriting the corrupted metadata file with an uncorrupted though false one from another backup worked to some extent. maybe i'll figure out a similar trick to extract other info.
