When I download an MMS message, connection switches to provider data. Problem is, I have free MMS but data isn't free.
It looked like Skype tried to sign in as soon as I connected, so I turned it off.. but this may be a problem in the future. Other apps are probably trying the same thing.. there shouldn't be all that many, but one I can think of is the app updater.

So my question is: is there a way to tell Skype/etc. to stay away from the GPRS connection?

Thx!

Interesting one and i think you only have 2 options here....

Go into all your apps to find out if they actually need or require gprs in any way or form and of possible turn that option off or point it in another direction away from gprs.

Go into your gprs options and make it so that it will only get data manually not auto so that you have full control over anything running in the background.

Hope this helps but am sure others have some idea's too.

I'm not quite sure if it works this way;
Newer versions of fMMS allow you to choose the method it creates the connecion. I use the Chaos-option which does interfere with the existing connection.
You can choose from the Internet connections - under settings menu - to use only WLAN. This does not affect fMMS.
And your MMS access point is quite likely set up in a way it does not allow any other data transfer.

This stupid thing happened to me as well. I earned free call credits from my teleco around 15$. And even though i had switched all apps to always ask or only wifi something i happen to pick up my phone and found ovi maps on and downloading map which consumed 12$ of credit withing few secs. I swear it must be hacked by my teleco to take away my free credits as i had not switched on the maps or any setting in maps to use gprs.

Apparently using the Havoc option in fMMS uses it in the way I want it to, after all -- data connection is open in parallel with actual internet connection, and most apps don't see it. Apparently that's the default mode of all other phones, anyway.

P.S. the info is here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=51890
