I purchased a Shure I2C-M headset and was surprised and disgusted that it doesn't work with my N900. This is due to reversed mic and ground contacts on iPhones that the headset was designed for. I'm now wondering exactly which wired headsets will actually work with my N900. How can I tell?

(Please keep this discussion to wired headsets, there's plenty of info about Bluetooth headsets elsewhere on the forum. Thanks.)

Same for me. I am using Beyerdynamic MMX100. See the wiring diagram here:

When pressing the button of the headset the sound in fine, in normal state the sound is somewhat garbled.

Could this possibly be solved with the headset manipulation over here ?

Help on this topic would really be appreciated as I neither want to change the headset nor the phone.

Thanx

You seem to have arrived at the answer already: Before purchasing any headset, check if the manufacturer lists it as being "iPhone compatible". If so, don't buy that one. Instead, look for headsets compatible with other Nokia phones.

That thread is a discussion of enabling media playback controls on Bluetooth headsets. The issue in this thread is a physical incompatibility between Nokia and Apple A/V jack wiring standards.

Your solution, given you wish to replace neither phone nor headset, is to either cut and rewire your headset cord or build a custom adapter.

Thanks for the clarification.

I managed to get it working by combining a 3.5mm to 6.5mm adapter with 6.5mm to 3.5mm adapter.

See sample images at: http://www.cable-trader.co.uk/images...%20adapter.jpg
and
http://www.cable-trader.co.uk/images..._5_mm_plug.JPG

Those 3.5mm splitter/adapters won't work because the male jack of the headphone is too long.

Looks clunky but it works for the moment. I'll call Beyerdynamic to ask if they could do something about it.
If someone comes across a nicer adapter please post here.

THX

I am not a fan of the standard headset. Got a pair of Griffin TuneBudd Mobile which are my favorite affordable headset and when I insert them into the N900 there is a horrible feedback that only goes away if I pull them out slightly. (It seems to get quieter if I press the button). Why would seemingly standard mic/headsets not work? Can the headset be modified.

I've been having the same problem. Has anyone found an earphone+mic that natively allows us to listen to music and talk to people when needed?

The only adapter i found which should work is:

http://www.kvconnection.com/product-p/km-354r3m-r2f.htm

i currently trying to get an alternative adapter in europe (germany).

i also try to solder one myself if i get the parts.

if i cant find/make a working adapter, i think i will order the adapter linked.

(i bought a skullcandy fmj headset which does not work, and currently using a 3pol extention cable to get at least the headphones working. but i need a 4pol cross adapter to get the mic working)

What's about the headset of a Nokia N95 or N95-8GB?
I have one, and the headphone and micro works, but not the call/start/stop/rew/fwd buttons.
  • Is there a possibility to build an adapter?
  • Would be possible to program some SW to make it work?
