Hi Im thinking of buying an N900, reading the posts on here it seems to be the most advanced phone on the market, and would be grateful if I could get some help, I know I can mod and hack the n900 reading here. I know the answer is probably yes to all these questions but i want to be sure before I buy, and there are too many posts on here to check though.

1) Can I connect to my work email server to get my appointments and emails live (we use microsoft small business server 2003)

2) Will it integrate with my bluetooth in my car so i can talk over the cars speakers and the phonebook will show up on my idrive

3) As its a smartphone can I play need for speed and other smartphone games ?

4) Supports voice control, ie to call a contact etc

does anyone know how many apps are available for the n900

Im torn between this and an android

no apple phone as i want the freedom to hack and mod and edit scripts and run terminal commands

Yes, but only if your Exchange server is not set up to require things like lock codes or the device perform a self wipe.

Quite a few, but Mostly not in an App Store.

The N900 will give you this in spades, but it's phone capabilities aren't equivalent to other devices.

Really you have to evaluate what you find important in a device like this and buy accordingly.

The answers wmarone wrote, were right in my opinion... Just wanted to tell you that N900 is neither a phone, nor a smartphone.

As for playing games, the best solution is installing NITDroid in my opinion. It's great for playing games. I wanted to try it, but just did so for a night, because I don't like close-source things.

You would be more than welcome to join our community.

It is a very good phone to have, the good thing is, is that you are aware what you have to do to make it a good phone and that hasn't put you off.

1. The email is easy to set up but i am not sure about connecting to microsoft small business 2003.

2. Yep should do, not sure about idrive.

There are loads of apps out and plenty more being created.

Don't know much about the android but all i can say the N900 is an awesome phone and used correctly you will not be disappointed.

Read up more on this forum just to get a feel of it all then make your mind up.

You are right it's not a phone it's a tablet but didn't want to create confusion.

I know I'll get blasted for being a troll or whatever, but I've owned this device since it was available in the US (December, 2009).

The N900 is not good at being a phone OR a tablet. At best, it's a fun toy to hack around on. If you're serious about getting a smartphone/tablet/phone, look elsewhere. When people ask me if I like the N900, I always say "It's a fun hobby!" and advise against them getting one unless they have the time to deal with the many quirks it has.

Works nice for me... Are you used to GNU/Linux systems?
I'm asking because I think it's a really great tablet... AND also a nice and must-have thing for a hacker in my opinion...

For your requirements, I would recommend Android. This also gives you the choice of the latest hardware.

I did not try this one as our corporate policy does not allow "foreign" phones but I am sending/forwarding the appointments
from Outlook with "Forward as iCalendar" which attaches a *.ics file to the mail.

When I open this ics item in the email on the N900 it jumps directly to calendar and creates a new item. :-)
Only minus: attachments have to be included into the forward email.

emails probably could be done via rules but I did not try this.
