when i saw the words, steam table, python, and C i had rcolistete in mind. he's working on some academic/mathematical/educational apps. maybe he can help.

If you know the formula or how to search for it, it would probably be quite easy to implement it as either a zenity-based shellscript or maybe even as a queen beecon script.
Otherwise a spreadsheet program like gnumeric can do very advanced calculations.
