Just spent around 4 hours installing various apps onto my replacement (for a WSOD) 770.
Thought I'd try a new kernel to improve the MMC card speeds which were very slow, so stuck on zImage-su-18-200639-2gb-mmcplus52Mhz.zip (yes I did unzip it first!)
Went for a reboot (actually it was a shutdown) and the unit just brings up the Nokia logo, stays there for ~20 seconds then turns itself off.
Took the battery out, mains out, tried every different combination of power, MMC cards in/out etc. And after a good 20 boots still just gets as far as Nokia, and no progress bar, then turns itself off.
Same issue as reported a number of times, most recently here.
So, thinking through how the Nokia OS flaher app works, figured I'd start the recovery process using the Nokia app, and the 2006-49-2 OS (which is the one which was on there), and pull the plug before the progress bar started.
Left it 6-7 seconds into the flash, then yanked the usb out. Couple of seconds later the progress bar starts and she's up!
Nothings lost, all is at it was, apart from having the correct kernel back on there, which is fine!

Good news to anybody who suffers the same fate.
