Since so many people ask me over and over again (though the topic has been discussed here at length) I wrote a simple DVD to Nokia 770 or Nokia N800 Internet Tablet HOWTO.

I hope this answers the question once and for all.

Excellent, I was going to shell out for a copy of DVD Catalyst but I don't think there's any need to now, so thank you thoughtfix

Ah, very cool that there's already an N800 setting in HandBrake.

I generally don't watch movies other than on my TV, but I might give this a shot later just to see how it works.

Thanks for the tutorial!

There's no N800 setting in Handbrake, but Handbrake can convert files that can be read into the Media Converter. That's good stuff right there.

I just use Instant Handbrake to rip them directly into MP4 format and the files play back just fine on my 5g iPod, N800, N95, and PSP.
I did this with the entire second season of "Wild Wild West" and it worked flawlessly.
That's more of a "one-step" solution though, and while you can tweak a few things in Instant Handbrake, you can't tweak much.
I thought Handbrake could just rip into regular MP4 (non-H.264) so the AVI step is not needed?

I use another one-step solution:

Code:
770-encode dvd://1 /media/mmc2/SomeMovie.avi

Do you play them back using MPlayer or Nokia Media Player?

For me only the default Nokia player works and I want to use MPlayer. I find that the second stage degrades the quality.
