What are the optimal video conversion settings for the N770, e.g. resolution, bit rate, frame rate and all the various other settings that one can make? I have Handbrake (which I plan to use to rip DVD movies) and there a good number of settings to make.

Also, can you comment for mplayer and the oem media player.

Finally, I have seen some long threads on mplayer. Can someone in a nutshell indicate whether it is now working well for N770 (OS 2006) and whether the install is straight forward?

i'm looking for the same info (codec, resolution, bitrate etc etc).

I just installed mplayer on my 770 using the "install now" link on maemo.org/downloads. works fine.

Hi, I have been learning this: how to convert for 770 in the last two months.

Here's what I have learned:
You should create an avi first and then convert it with media converter. Media converter is very fast and will set up all the settings for you, probably you want to use "770 mplayer optimal" setting in this program. This creates a 400x240 video which ONLY runs on mplayer, not original video player on the 770. So, don't try to set up the settings in Handbrake to make a perfect video for the 770. Just create a good enough avi file in handbreak and then convert it to a 770 video with media converter. This is easiest.

Given what I just said, it may be possible to get all the settings correct in Handbrake (but you will have to read a lot in these forums to figure it out). I think someone put their handbrake settings here in a thread. There is a lot of info in these forums and also on a few pages that are linked to in the forum (such as on handbrake). After about 4 hours reading on video converting I havent figured out the best settings, so I just used media converter which is very easy (its all done for you).
Lastly, you probably want to use original frame rate, and 400x240, (bit rate? read the threads, I'm not sure).

I use DVD decryptor, AutoGK and then media converter and it all works well for me. As for AutoGK settings, I just choose how big the avi will be, about 200 Megs, so it makes the settings for me. You don't specify bitrate or other details. Plus its very easy to add subtitles, so I can watch it on a noisy train/subway. Good luck.
Please post what Handbrake settings you discover work if you do figure it out. I am not convinced that Handbreak is the best software to convert videos, but I haven't tried it. I know a few posters are saying you should us this software, but is it best in their opinion or really best? You have to decrypt the DVD first with another program and then use handbreak.

Maybe the people who are writing how great Handbreak is can tell us what settings on Handbreak will make a good 770 video without using media conveter (*hint*).
