Hi. I've got a couple of questions related to the 2007 hacker edition and backup.

1: Is it possible to create a full backup of my current system, in the style of a fiasco image or similar?

Currently I'm only working with the 64 MB RS-MMC card which came with the 770, so I haven't made a great deal of use of the backup and restore applications, nor have I dual-booted yet.

I tried the previous hacker edition and I liked it, but I went back to OS2006 and I've now spent a reasonable amount of time adding applications to it. Creating a full backup of this would be nice. I have root and I have openssh running.

Maybe mounting an smb share and creating a backup with dd to there would work.. Any other tips welcome.

2: Exactly what does "feature mp3 codec" mean, in relation to things missing from the ROM?

Does this mean that it is impossible to play mp3s, or does it mean that hardware accelerated mp3 decoding is non-functional? Is it possible to install a software decoder, such as libmad and deal with the higher cpu usage that this might bring about.

Many thanks.
Ben

Ben,

I have a N800, but my comments should apply. I have not tried using dd to make a back up. I suppose it is posible, but you would be left with an image file that might be hard to restore.

Before this latest N800 system upgrade, I mounted one of my linux boxes on the n800, and did a selective tar back up (of things like /etc /usr/ sbin/ ...) and avoided things like /proc /media. This took a surprizing long time, and in the end failed before it got to /var Even still, I still have access to those pre-upgrade files (or most of them), which has helped me in restoring my N800 after the upgrade cleared everything.

In summary, a tar back up would give you more flexibility than dd. You can do a back up to a network server, but you will have to get nfs client or cifs (samba) client working first.

I hope this helps,

Craig...

You need to do one of two things:

1. A tar backup, which will preserve permissions, etc., and copy the tar backup somewhere else (off unit).

2. Set up another *nix box (probably Linux), with rsyncd running on it, and run rsync on your 770. This will copy your files over, and has the benefit of allowing you to update your remote "image" with any changes you have made. rsync is available for the 770/800 as well as grsync (which is a graphical front-end). However, you're probably better off with the command line, as you've got more options available than grsync provides for this kind of use.

BOTH of the above methods will require that you become root BEFORE running either method, so you have complete access to all directories/files. See the "becomeroot" package.

Right, thanks for both of those responses. Still haven't upgraded.

What about the mp3 query? Has anyone successfully played an mp3 file under 2007 hacker edition?
