Has anyone tried PhoneMEAdvanced MR2 Java CDC/FP version 1.1 VM for the N800? I tried to unzip the binary runtime build, to a new directory but could not create a new directory (denied) Has anyone had success in doing this? Can you tell me the steps you took?
Thanks!

Check out this thread: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ead.php?t=6279

I personally haven't tried it yet, but it sounds promising!

Thanks Hordeman, That's where I tried to follow the steps to install the binary runtime, but the directions were sparse so I could not get it to unzip into a directory of my choice. It came back with access denied. But I admit that I am not that familiar with Linux or what permissions I would need to unzip to a directory. So I'm looking for some guidance.

If anyone has had success with Java apps I haven't seen their message.

Can someone explain to me what OSGi is, and why I would want to develop for it on my N800? It seems to be the only thing that makes this version of java useful.

One problem with Java is that the libraries have to be installed on the local machine.

OSGi is a module loading facility. With it, if you have a basic java virtual machine installed on the machine you can download other other modules as you need them from the web. Sun has been working on a competing standard for doing this, but OSGi has been around for quite a while (Eclipse uses it)

Can anyone tell me if the CDC framework will by default run CLDC apps? Would it be possible to use this CVM to run midlets? If not, what would it take? According to http://www.informit.com/guides/conte...ava&seqNum=170, CLDC seems to be more limited than CDC, so it stands to reason that CLDC is a subset of CDC...or at least closely related. Or am I way off?

I'm interested in getting Mobile Processing apps to run on an N800:

http://mobile.processing.org/index.php

I'm in an NYU graduate program that teaches Processing, which is really just a java class that contains a number of easy-to-use graphical objects and methods (line(), rect(), ellipse(), mouse events, serial communication, etc), and has its own stripped-down dev environment. It would be awesome to use it for N800 apps!

I love Processing, but as things stand, no, you can't.

With the new GTK in OS2008, I've made some strides in getting real java (so you'd be running full Processing) going: PhoneME is still bound to QT at this time.
