Does anyone know if FinchTV (Geospiza, Inc) runs on either the N800 or N810? I don't have a N810 yet but will be getting one for Christmas. This is a program for analyzing DNA sequence files. Although it's not the best in its class it is free and runs well on Linux systems.

I'm a bacterial geneticist and I'm wondering if the N810 will be able to replace my laptop for all of my computer based lab work operations.

The site says (http://www.geospiza.com/finchtv/download/download.html) "Display requirements: 800x600 screen resolution, millions of colors." and that the Linux system requirements are " RedHat: v. 9, Enterprise WS release 3 / SuSE Linux: v. 8.2," but it runs well on my Ubuntu laptop. The program doesn't need to be installed at all, just download, unzip, and run the app.

On a side note, does anyone know of a good linux (or even windows) alternative to strider (OSX)? I've been looking for one for a long, long time.

I can't tell you if it will work but i would expect something like this to need quite some computing power, so not sure if the tablet is the way to go...

I am not sure if this is open source software or not or what libraries it relies upon. At the very least, the binary download from their website won't work, as it is compiled for X86 processor, whereas the Nokia Internet Tablets use a OMAP (arm architecture). At the very least, you would need to be able to download the source code for this program and set up a build environment and would likely need to make some changes to the code to adapt it to the Hildon user interface and adapt it for lower resolution use (800*480). My guess is this one is a no go. You are probably better off getting a small X86 laptop that runs linux like the Eee PC from Asus.

As for computing power, it really doesn't need much. The program doesn't involve much more that looking at specially formatted text files. I run it regularly on my girlfriend's 400 Mhz, Xubuntu machine.

Rocketman, you're right. I hadn't even thought about the processor architecture. Thanks for the insight.
