Hello,

I apologize if this is a redundant question...

Has anyone successfully packaged US maps to use with Maemo Mapper that I can download?

Thank you,
Sam

Thanks for useful link. I will definitely be using the information on there

So, I take it no one has actually put together a comprehensive (zip) of maps, POI, etc. for people to download/save onto their SD card? It sounds like downloading the maps from scratch will be very tedious (and redundant if someone has already done so) -- especially if you're doing ALL of US.

Thanks,
Sam

I think if you did all of the US it would be several gigs, probably in the hundreds.

That's what I figured at first. But I was looking through the Navicore package and it comes with a 2 Gig SD card with US/CANADA maps -- so assumed it would be possible. At most it should fall within a capacity of a DVD.

Thanks,
Sam

The Navicore maps aren't bitmaps, so they occupy much less space. Full-detail maps for the entire US run about 3.2TB according to Maemo Mapper.

eh... I didn't realize it was bmp (I'm still waiting on my n800 to arrive). Hmmm... so there is no "regional" or state based map repository?

My concern for asking is two fold...

1. I want to able to use Maemo Mapper when I'm lost. For example, I'm in strange location A and want to go to strange location B and I don't have access to WIFI. I want to start MAEMO MAPPER and have it guide to location B. If I don't have the maps (since it's a "strange location") I won't be able to use MM.

2. The Google URI readily becomes outdated.

Thanks,
Sam

Usually, you know you're going on a trip before hand. Just download the maps you'll need then. Just for Fairbanks and North Pole, my map folder is sitting right around 800Mb. That's for only about 40 square miles of map info. I download my maps with zoom settings of 1, 5, and 7.

True... if its a pre-planned trip. But I understand the limitations. Well, it's not really a limitation but a capacity and time issue. Im curious, how long does the download typically take for a mapped route?

Thanks for the help,
Sam

It's really dependent on the length of the route and how detailed you want to get. When I downloaded my maps it took about 20 minutes.
