Evening! Adventures in upgrading os7->os08
Started up the wizard on my xp and pointed it at the downloaded .bin. Started up and all looked good until the wizard disconnected the usb and said the file was successfully transfer but the installation failed. It suggested checking the usb cable and restarting the wizard.

Well!

I downloaded two other copies of the correct bin (n800 07->08) and tried again and again. one time the wizard even found an internet update and took 20 some minutes with that then did the same thing. (Hopes were raised for a while).

Now the n800 doesn't boot. I have to pull the battery to shut it down.

This is not good. Help!

Thanks

While I sympathize with your trouble, didn't you just start a thread about this here:
http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=13463
So why not just add onto that?

Well. I started that thread to gather information together on the process of updating. I was confused as to the role of "flasher" and the proper sequence. I was also going to ask more detailed questions on just what is happening during the upgrade. I am looking to give myself a general education on the lunix, maemo, and programing.

Then the event happened. I wrote of it there and then started this tread here. There because it was part of that process; here because now I have this problem. There is was a newbie question which goes south fast; here it is an upgrade gone bad and request for help.

Still: n800 now not functional. won't power down; when plugged in the screen goes white and hopefully it does recharge.

Help!

You need to make sure the file you downloaded is the correct , entire file. Most likely, if it is the same file size as the one you were trying to download, it is correct.

Something about your setup stopped the normal flashing process from working. My first guess is that the file download was corrupted. A lot of people downloaded files partially last night. If that isn't the cause of your problem, something else about your setup is.

If you can't figure out why your setup is causing this problem, you should probably try another computer.

Yep! Tried three different downloads. and each one sized up just fine. Now My computer? That's an idea. I can try some other computer though I really don't know anyone with one! Odd, I know.
Still: there hasn't ever been a problem. I have upgraded the n800 before, same computer, same cable, same port, worked just fine. It finds it now just fine. blah-blah. Will seek out another computer.

Haven't tried a different host computer yet but moving with the different port suggestion. XP and wizard are excited. It jumps onto the net. The install estimate 183m and 27s! Moves along quickly to 44 and some, dies. Take the retry option and it starts off at 19 min! Then goes backwards to 27 over the next 15 real minutes. Stalls. I disconnect the internet and re-start up the wizard. The answer to the question about whether or not it recharges when there is the white screen seems to be no. Tablet dies. And still the install didn't work.

OK.

Ideas? Suggestion?

Mine For Nokia: don't put out an update you don't have the capacity to feed. make the install options available at every stage; no just jumping onto the net if you can without giving the option to install from disk. Let the beast charge from the usb port (even if it can't keep up, it's got to help) and let it charge while connected. Dah! Some sort of roll back, protection against a partial install borking the whole system.

Short: Don't come out to play with the big boys unless you are ready. Nokia doesn't seem to take the tablets very seriously. kind of step child status. Base this on the fact that their site is phone oriented and the tablet gets second thoughted, like the support section doesn't even mention the tablet.

Me? What about me now? are there options other than retuning this? Can't charge is a big deal. I don't know anybody with one.

You only need enough battery power to run the N800 for a few minutes while you update it with a downloaded image. That shouldn't be a problem. It's unlikely that your battery is dead. Try connecting to a different usb port.

Thanks for the support!
Battery does seem to charge up. left it plugged in all night. Did try two other usb ports. Also rebooted my lappy just to try that. Next? Well even though the wizard program worked before I am going to uninstall it and reinstall it then try again, again. Frustrated.
Also wrote to Nokia and they advised me to take the machine in to an authorized repair place and see. Hum. They know something we don't?

Will try a friend's. It is just that they all have Macs and I'd have to learn how to do it that way.

Brick? Hockey puck would be more satisfying.

No No And No. The Nokia People say send it home. Just happened to fritz out while doing the update?

Will send it out today But it being the holidays, I certainly won't get it until next year!

By then the repositories will be all calm and all the software goodness will be more mature. I will be lurking around the sites to learn about this great little machine. And getting to know all of you too!

Thanks for the reads and sympathy.

OK! Got the idea from reading a different thread about a fellow n800er having flashing problems to reflash os07! and it works! Got a machine again. I first tried os08 beta but that jumped off at the same point.

Now I have an amd64 laptop running xp with 1.5 g ram and am not running any other programs on it other than the browser so it is not likely to be an issue from the lappy.

Ideas?
