xmms is the only one I'm aware of that has an equalizer. There's a thread around here somewhere on xmms.
Canola has it's a volume controll in it - are you sure that wasn't just turned down.
Other alternatives are UKMP, MediaBox and Kilikali.

I've tried Canola, but the playback volume is far too low for some reason. The interface is ok, but not really to my liking. Kagu plays back at a decent volume, but again I'm not keen on the interface. None have an equaliser which, I consider essential for a portable music player.
What other packages are out there that can do the job well?
