In fact, I have not found a search option for POIs, although I may be looking in the wrong place.
Is there an application which serves in some sort of a middle ground? Easy, straight-forward POI searching without an Internet connection, without nagware and with an up-to-date database?
I wouldn't even mind it without maps, GPS feature or directions; just so long as it lists and helps me find points of interest.
Is there such a thing?

And do a web Google on "poi free" and there are several free sites with data sets like all the Walmarts mapped.
I'll be looking for it also. I found the app at work and now with the same search terms it didn't show up.

That software wouldn't load on my W2K system, but I did find http://www.gps-data-team.com/poi which has ton's of POI's. Just download them to your NiT in .gpx form and use them in maemo mapper. I assumed that you don't mind downloading them with an internet connection
Oh - if you download say all the WalMart stores it will take a long time to load.
