Hi,

I have been using maemo mapper quite a bit lately when walking, and recorded a lot of tracks. Has anyone ported MM to the desktop, or know of any similar (free) software which will allow me to view these maps on a desktop PC, linux based preferrably?

I have used Memory Maps in the past, but it's not free or linux based. I could probably create a web app based on google maps, but I'd really like to have something offline and desktop based.

Thanks

There's a free version of Fgis which works with shape files. But it is windoze based.

There is GRASS which is Unix based, but very complex.

There are probably a ton of others, but these are the only two I've used.

Google earth works great. You'll just need to use GPSBabel to change the gpx into a KML.

gemniii42 and gompers, thanks for your suggestions, I'll try them out. As I'm really after a visual representation rather than information, Google earth is probably the best bet. Plus there's a linux version (well, wine, but close enough)

Thanks guys

The track file format should be independent of any OS. GPSBabel can convert between almost any formats, many of which you never heard of. I haven't looked at the format used by Maemo Mapper, but I would think it's a fairly standard one, given the way it uses off-the-shelf maps.

I believe there is a native linux version of google earth.

My bad, I thought that google earth was still wine-based, but I was thinking of picasa instead (which is wine based but includes wine with it)

No need for that, Google Earth understands gpx.
