Here is an N810, upgraded to Diablo + first Diablo update (did the 2nd update and many things got screwed, so, for the moment holding at Diablo+1st update)

The backup application does not work. After giving the name of the backup file (to be created) and selecting WHAT stuff to backup, the application just hangs in there..doing nothing.

I have read about the claws issue with backups. I do not have claws installed.

This backup problem has been already documented : here and in some other posts in this site; nevertheless the problem seems to persist.

Who is still experiencing problems with Backups in Diablo ?
What are the required procedures to make backup work ?
Will this be prevented in the future...with the "SSUs" ?

Your comments are appreciated, thanks in advance.

Pidgin maybe?

In the past actually, with the second (4.2008.36-5) SSU. Until you do upgrade there's a temporary workaround described here.

To exclude/find a similar problem like with claws you can check which files are in:
Code:
cd /etc/osso-backup/applications/
ls -al
I would propose to post the results of the above here too so other people can comment.

If you don't care at all about backing-up pidgin then you can do the following.

Become root in your preferred way and type:
Code:
cd /etc/osso-backup/applications/
mv pidgin.conf pidgin.conf.off

Thanks for the hint. I will do that from now on.

In the mean time, I took the long way. I did a manual backup on the memory card of my ~/.purple firectory (which has all the Pidging stuff) then, I uninstalled Pidging and tried the Backup utility. It worked !

So, seems the culprit so far was Pidging.

Thanks for all your help in this.

Now my remaining question is: Why are some applications "backup-able" and others are not ? what is the catch ? or... I should say what are the requirements for an application to be able to be backup'd with the normal maemo OS2008 backup utility ?

TIA.

In the latest SSU this problem has been corrected..
Check in bugzilla https://bugs.maemo.org/ by searchind there 'osso-backup' for more details on that and the other pending issue (symlinks).
