I'm sure I've seen this kind of thing before, but the BBC claims it's new:

US and Canadian scientists have built a novel device that effortlessly harvests energy from human movements.

The adapted knee brace, outlined in the journal Science, can generate enough energy to power a mobile phone for 30 minutes from one minute of walking.

at 1.5kgs it's a bit much for my long term hikes, but I'd willingly put it through some tests on training jaunts. With that power I'd be able to power a bluetooth phone continuously and set up a gpsd stream, a proper person-tracker. Fun times.
