Here are the instructions for hebrew on os2008:

Warning: This is untested please report if it works - apologies if it breaks your device in any way but I take no responsibility if you want to try it.

PREREQUISITES:
1. download becomeroot from the maemo repositories and install it

2. Install culmus fonts (see http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ghlight=hebrew)

-----------------

INSTALL HEBREW:
1. download http://www.isratux.com/maemo/hebrew.tar.gz to your n800

2. type sudo gainroot <enter> into the terminal to become root

3. type cd / <enter> (to change to the / directory of filesystem)

4. untar the hebrew.tar.gz by typing

tar -xvzf PATHTOHEBREWTARGZ <enter>

for example if you saved it to your documents folder:

tar -xvzf /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/hebrew.tar.gz <enter>

5. type hildon-im-recache <enter> (to update hildons input methods)

6. type reboot <enter> (to restart the device)

The hebrew input method should now appear as Keyboard (Hebrew) on the input method menu on the virtual keyboard and you should be able to type hebrew into any application.

I hope this works for some people, I apologise to those of you who have been waiting for this to be released (especially tori) but my computer died and I havent had any scratchbox to work on this project recently.

This method for enabling hebrew is entirely based on the work of mohammed sameer (foolab.org). Thanks to his efforts there was very little work required to get hebrew working. Please dont send him any more questions about hebrew input howto as he doesnt understand hebrew at all.

I put this tar.gz and instructions up now as I'm still without computer for a few days and many people want hebrew working so please test it and let me know if it works. The tar.gz is a backup file I rescued from my old hard drive that seemed to work well with my n800. I hope to package it properly in the near future but am not so experienced with debs so if anyone can help it would be much appreciated. There is also another package of hebrew fonts (culmus-fancy) on the way once i get scratchbox running again....

What I don't understand:

Why is there a need for extra coding, when the original keyboard application already supports multiple languages. Why is a data file for hebrew (and arabic) keyboard not enough?

Why do you have /usr/local/share/him-arabic/ without hebrew and /usr/share/him-arabic/ with hebrew?

Hi realitygaps and thanks for this,
I was just getting matan's help for the exact same issue.
I followed your instructions.
changing the secondary language shows [] not Hebrew[]. I choose it. when I change to the HE keyboard I see no keys, just a blank space.
I am using a N800 with latest offical os2008 firmware.

Im a bit of a newbie to this, and this was just the work I had left from when I got this working. It seems to work on my tablet so I thought it would work on others.

I didnt add a secondary language, instead i switched the input method to Keyboard (Hebrew) on the menu for the virtual keyboard to access the hebrew keyboard. This works fine on my n800 does this work for you niv or anyone else? Like you said if you add another language then you get a blank keyboard but if you just switch input methods it seems to work OK.

I still dont have any sort of linux environment to test this on, but a number of people requested that I post what I had gotten working, if you can make this better matan please do - This is my first maemo experiments and they resulted in working fonts and input so I have tried to share them so others can use them even if they are not working in the right maemo way yet they allow me to use hebrew on the tablet and also right to left.

I will take a look at this again over the weekend when I have the scratchbox set-up and then hopefully I can get a better version working which is not just a quick fix tar.gz

A separate plugin is needed because HIM ardcodes the font and that font doesn't support Arabic.

I have to admit that my code is not that good and there's room for improvements. It's also a bit slow but I scratched my itch and it works for me.

What I'd do is to package the Hebrew XML file, depend on him-arabic (From my maemo repository) and execute "him-arabic-register he" in postinst and that's it.

Cheers,

For the first time doing anything on a brand new N800 (OS2008) it does work for me using the input method Keyboard (Hebrew) and in addition I can read Hebrew web sites in
their original version (Ivrit, ya'ani).

Thank you realitygaps. I'm a newbie user, and very much an 'end' user - the one click hebrew install sounds great when you can post it. :
I wrote earlier to Mohammed as well - he was great and did all he could
