**EDIT**
The solution is: install sox media player, in extras http://repository.maemo.org
from terminal as root
apt-get install sox
under Audio settings in Xchat select External Program
for external program enter /usr/bin/play
or whatever path the play command is located in.
Restart xchat and voila`
Thanks to Khisanth and Johnx for the help

Hello,
I'm looking for help. I cannot get the xchat sound configuration to work properly.

Thinking there were no sounds installed, I downloaded some .wav files of beeps and alarms etc, and on the sound tab configured a few of them to play for private messages for example.
For sound playing method I am using "Automatic"

Still does not work. Under the Alert tab I have marked all the checkboxes for beep on message etc.

Do I have to use an "external Program?" and if so what exact path do I need to put there to have the Media Player do the work, and does this mean it will open Media player each time it has to play a sound?

Thank you very much for your help.

ok I got it to work thanks to Khisanth in the #xchat channel under the freenode server.

I just installed mplayer, and found out the path by typing "which mplayer" in the terminal
then I used that path in the preferences setting for the external player and it worked.

If anyone knows of a way to make it work without mplayer, with the regular media player, I'd love to know how.

Sigh, another problem.

Now whenever a sound gets played, mplayer starts a process which never terminates and this bogs down the cpu. every time another sound is played it starts a new process, until there are enough open to make the system crash.

I tried playing something from the terminal, and it also keeps the process open after playing the file. Here is a link to the output:

Any help greatly appreciated on whether to make mplayer work or to make xchat use the regular player.
