Greets to all.

I am thinking of buying one of these units. I am considering the device against a laptop.

Here are my questions:
1. Can custom TTF fonts be installed on the unit?
2. Let us say that there is an embedded RealPlayer stream on a webpage. Will the device play the stream by pressing on the play button, or does it need any certain codecs are plug-ins?
3. How is the speaker quality?
4. Does it need a screen protector, or can it do without one?
5. Does it deal with relatively large webpages like the iPod/iPhone, all zoomed out? In other words, is there a need for much horizontal scrolling?

Go easy on me, I just started out here

PS - is $230 a good price for the machine from buy.com? Are we looking at any price drops soon?

Thanks a lot guys.

yes

The built-in mediaplayer supports realplayer content.

3. How is the speaker quality?

Sounds pretty good . Hardly any distortion . But not much bass with such a small speaker, and the maximum volume is a bit low.

4. Does it need a screen protector, or can it do without one?

Most people on the forum prefer a screenprotector see the wiki.

5. Does it deal with relatively large webpages like the iPod/iPhone, all zoomed out? In other words, is there a need for much horizontal scrolling?

Because of the larger screen and higher resolution you don't need to scroll as much as with the iPhone. There is a 'fit to view' function that makes a page fit on the page, although it makes pages load slower. The tablet way to do the scrolling and zooming is a bit clunky compared to the iPhone, but the screen itself is better for reading.

I think they cost around $180 ~ $200 right now.

Excellent. Where can I get them at that price?

And are there any guides for the fonts?

Thanks very much

From Nokia, $312 for the N810, if you've an inclination that way:

The N800 is $240.
Check Amazon, not sure where else.

Nah, I do not believe there is much more to the N810 to make it worth $70 more...

Search the forum using the google search on the home page, and wiki. If you don't find anything just ask on the forum.

The n810 has some advantages like a brighter screen for reading outside (transflective screen) , hardware keyboard and GPS, although the GPS locks a bit slowly and not everyone likes the keyboard. On the other hand the n800 can fit two sd cards instead of one like the n810.

Good luck

I am not seeing any good deals on the unit, so I will wait a little.

Can the N800 handle PowerPoint presentations?

Google Docs works swell on OS2008 - so i've heard, has power point abilities, using it right now for a project. KDE is on n800/n810. Haven't come across a powerpoint program that runs in OS2007 or OS2008 maybe I just missed it.

I really want both a n810 and a n800 just because they both have their advantages and drawbacks. n810 is good except for single MiniSD & directional pad layout (hard to use with the small ring - end up pressing center button instead of the direction, close proximity to the upper sliding portion makes pressing up really difficult)

n800 is good except for the rather large layout of the device, no GPS, no trans-reflective layer for sunlight viewing.

n800 is cheaper so i'll prolly get that first since I am always kinda broke, and its dual SD slots (n cheap n bigger SD's vs smaller and more expensive miniSD(more popular microSD))
