when I first got the n800, I would plug in the charger and I would get a beep and a "not charging" message (the words not charging and a little x near the battery icon).

Then about the third time I plugged it in, it worked and I haven't had a problem until now.

All of a sudden it did it again tonight. I checked and I don't have one of the bad batteries. I know the battery has drained (it says it has about 3 hours of work time left).

Any suggestions?

I'm getting the same problem.

A few weeks ago my N800 stopped charging from the supplied ac-dc adapter.

I switched to my MultiSync mini-USB cable with charger and this appeared to charge the battery.

Now, after draining the battery completely neither adapter will charge the battery and I get a "Not charging" message in the middle of the screen.

Perhaps the BP-5L battery is dead? I think the chargers are probably ok.

Have managed (apparently) to get my BP-5L battery charging again.

I tried the steps mentioned on a previous thread:

1. Remove battery.
2. Remove both SD cards.
3. Wait 10 minutes or so.
4. Replace battery.
5. Charge. This only worked for a few minutes with my mains ac-dc charger, then stopped charging. My multisync mini USB charger provided prolonged and continuous charging (do not know why mains charger stopped charging abruptly).

Battery is still charging (showing the mid screen charging icon against blank background).

When this is complete I shall replace SD cards and power up.

I shall never allow the battery to completely discharge again...

I seam to get the not charging problem intermitantly when using the car charger. But only if the battery is fairly drained.

Had similar problems with a Nokia Phone as well.

I'm guessing it has something to do with current expected v supplied. It all seams a bit hit and miss. But using the mains charger has always been successful.

Any battery experts out there able to provide something more firm on what might be happening.

Now confirm that MultiSync mini-USB complete charge of flat BP-5L battery successful.

SD cards re-inserted and tablet booted up.

Still no charging provided with AC-DC adapter but USB charging still working.

I discovered that one of my AC chargers has gone bad. Was putting out 1 or 2 volts. The other tested at about 7 volts.

The N800 would give the charging indication when I used the bad charger, sometimes cycling the indication on and off, but wasn't actually charging. The good charger would work as expected -- top up the battery in an hour or so.

Mine only charges with something plugged in the stereo jack, too, and only with the wire hanging in a certain direction. I broke my original charger, so I haven't been gentle with it, obviously.

The charging is a little janky, in my experience. I've had about every flat battery issue, since the device sometimes just stops charging, mid-cycle. I wish they had a locking mechanism between the cable and device, or at least a more firm fit.

i bought an external battery charger, and for some reason it works every time! it never charges connected to a wall socket (i am in spain don't know if it makes a diff. i bought it in the states) or to a laptop usb, but with the sync retractable cable and the external battery...works every time. doesn't matter if i drain the bettery completely!

I just read a post about the n810 and it seemed to be a simmilar problem, so I can say its fairly safe to say its something to do with your charger not working the way its intended to work. Also we all know a bad battery does wonders sarcastically for a perfectly fine device.

I don't understand what your trying to accomplish by removing all the removable parts of the n800, SD's don't make a difference, current only runs through them when your device is on, Im gonna go look in the spec sheets and verify this, im pretty sure im right. And the battery, since its a L-Polymer or Ion, can't remember which, but it could have effect on the battery to let it sit w/o having to power anything for 10 min. Otherwise I just see the faith + remove stuff idea is sort of wasted time. Time only can be a factor for the batt...
