I found this article describing how to have a local Wikipedia copy on a internet tablet. It involves 3,2 GB (English version) of content and is accessed using a local lighthttpd webserver. Thanks to the OpenMoko people.

- interesting... but doesn't one also need:

# perl
# perl-module-encode
# perl-module-encode-encoding
# perl-module-bytes
# perl-module-utf8
# perl-module-utf8-heavy
# squashfs-tools (optional)
# kernel-module-squashfs
# kernel-module-loop

installed on one's n800?

I have not tried it since I don't need a local Wikipedia myself right now. According to the article a 'apt-get -f install' will sort out the depencencies.

It might be more convenient to try to compile something like Wikipedia Dump Reader that can use the compressed single-file wikipedia xml dumps. I don't know how much trouble that would be, but there's also a set of scripts that someone wrote that could be adapted pretty easily.

Also, there is an obscure Japanese dictionary file format called epwing into which wikipedia can be converted. There is an n8x0 viewer for this format called ebview (instructions in Japanese but you just need the 3 .deb files at the bottom; the actual program's interface is in English). I currently only have done this for Japanese wikipedia. It took several hours and the result is 1.5X the size of the original dump but it the result is extremely convenient. I assume that English wikipedia will also work, but I haven't done it yet because it will probably take at least 24 hours on my computer.

FYI, there's also a wikipedia for SDictViewer

And get dictionaries and/or a copy of wikipedia here

Not saying this is necessarily better - just providing an alternative. I can tell you SDictViewer is fabulous for the Merriam Webster Dictionary - have not tried it with wikipedia.

Hi - I tried Alendit's mokopedia for N800, but the squashfs file system doesn't mount - any ideas?

start_mokopedia results in

mounting /dev/loop0 on /media/squashfs failed
