I tried to install evince this afternoon, and it failed due to insufficient memory; now, the application manager cannot find any applications, installed, available, or upgradable.

and it failed due to insufficient memory
try expanding the main memory to a flash card

now, the application manager cannot find any applications
... but you can still see them in the app. list (on the left of the screen)?
soultion
1) refresh application list (works for me)
2) reboot (never hurts )

I already have swap space enabled on the internal card, the most it will let me.

App manager is failing to connect to any of the catalogues I have enabled, so I can't even refresh. Starting app manager gives me an "Operation failed" error message. Rebooting does not help.

Failing any other advice, I suppose I shall have to reflash. Everything else still works, though, so I'll wait for the weekend.

Ah. I moved several galleries of pictures from my home folder to my external memory card, and voila we're updating again.

Okay, I tried to install evince again and now I'm stuck again. How do I remove the failed installation?

Answering my own question, I ran apt-get remove evince from root. First I had to make some more room in home memory, so I removed all the non-English user manuals I'll never need.
