The gadget worked great, till I started seeing some screen problems - screen vanished and all I saw are vertical lines, while it kept working - keys and touchscreen seems to work, and logging in via ssh works as well.
So, after trying to find a solution it seems that reflashing to os2008 might solve the problem, but after doing so it seems it does not matter at all.

You can see an example to the problem here -

Does anybody encounter such a problem ?
How can I solve this ?

Shushu

Your photo/movie doesn't play. But if you have reflashed it and the screen still doesn't work then it sounds like a hardware problem. Time to contact Nokia for a repair.

I had a similar problem. Sent to Nokia and they sent another one. On the new one the same problem has occurred twice. Both times I took both cards out and removed the battery for 15 minutes. Put them back in and it started working again. I don't know if it is coincidence or not. Good luck. Wonder if this is a common problem. Two out of two for me seems kind of ominous.

I've seen something like that happen on my laptop a number of times. The reason I bring that up is because it looks like, to me anyway, that X is crashing on startup, or maybe just trying to use an unsupported resolution, refresh rate or color depth. Maybe you installed some software that isn't working right or something else isn't working right and causing it to crash. Just my 2 cents, FWIW.

Since SSH still works and the unit continues to respond, maybe you can try killing and forcing X to restart (if that's even possible) or check for some error logs. I suppose you could re-flash the device and see if it goes away too, which would indicate a software vs. hardware issue.

He has already flashed the device, and said it made no difference. So that rules out additional software. I guess he could try the battery&card pull, no harm, but it sounds terminal to me if the screen doesn't work even after a flash.

Yeah, but the visual evidence (boot screen ok, X screen fades to black) certainly looks like a X failure with a slightly above limit resolution. If that is a hardware issue, the screen controller somehow does not reach the resolution used by X any more, but is somehow still working slightly sub-res - possible, but it sounds more likely that X is operating on a invalid resolution configuration-wise.

Oh, you were able to get his movie to play? I got nothing but a very blurred still picture, so I was just going by his description. I wonder what I'm missing in order to see the movie.... oh well.

Hey, I just tried it in IE and it works... I was using FF before. OK, now that I can see the movie I agree it doesn't look nearly as dead as I assumed. I thought he was getting NOTHING.

Edit: The movie is in Flash, and I run FlashBlock in FF, so that explains it... although I usually see an indication of blocked Flash content and there was nothing this time.

Thanks for the feedbacks.

Since reflashing didn't help, I guess taking it to Nokia is the right solution.
BTW, my memory cards are already out...
Microfab - do you have this behavior over and over again, and you take out the battery each time ? Or did it solve the problem for good ?
And last thing - how do I make Nokia handle my problem ? I want someone to see my problem there, verify my serial number, and say to me "yes, just send it and we will handle it"...

Well, since my November 2007 post the stripes have come and gone until today when the screen is either black or sometimes is striped. Am sending back to Nokia. So this will be my fourth time to deal with Nokia repair. I had the 770 that went back once, then my N800 will be back for the second time now, and my son's N800 has been back once. I've had good luck so far with the repair center, but wish the product was more robust. I have treated these with TLC, but still have had problems. Maybe I will get lucky and they will send me back a N810.
