There's no syslog out of the box, but you can install it from the tools repository (details at http://maemo.org/development/tools/). After that, the log is in /var/log/syslog.

Since I have experienced serveral times of system halt, I'd like to know how to retrieve those system logs for exceptional system errors.
I'm using Nokia N800 with the latest Diablo (4.2008.30-2).
The problem was, the power button still functioned when I pressed it, but I could do nothing with the touchscreen and all other buttons - it normally happened when I launched a program after a long time standby. So eventually I had to open the back cover and take the battery off.
I did try ssh to my N800 but ssh lost response.
