Hi, I have finally managed to attach an USB keyboard to my N800, and it basically works. Now I have the problem that it behaves like an english (QUERTY) keyboard, although it has a german (QWERTZ) layout. So if I press the key "Z", I get the letter "Y". Even worse is that the german Umlaute like "ä", "ö", "ü" cannot be typed with the USB keyboard, although there are the keys for it. What can I do?

same here, although the keys work just not æøå (norwegian letters). I just use a english KB, as i doubt there's a simple solution for this

I don't know if this is still useful (althought xmodmap seems timeless!):

http://maemo.org/community/wiki/HowTo_SetupKeyboard

There are some ideas on configuring a German/Nordic layout the hard way.

People have been modifying the keymaps of their Bluetooth keyboards and I believe the same principles work in this case too.

I'd also have a look at Maemo bugzilla and, if there's nothing relevant, adding a bug about the lack of support for alternative keyboard layouts.

Even if USB keyboards weren't officially supported, the Nokia developers based in Finland (which uses the same keyboard layout as in Sweden IIRC) might give such a request a sympathetic hearing.

Googling for "xmodmap language layout" could also provide some ideas, althought it would of course be nice to have a tried and tested Maemo procedure here.

First off, welcome to itT, columbo! i used xmodmap to get my USB keyboard to work correctly. it wasn't a language issue, just a problem of keyboard layout, but i think a similar method should work for you.

get xmodmap (to remap the keyboard keys), download this german keyboard layout to your "Documents" folder, and get rootsh (so you can become root with xterm). then, open xterm and type: xmodmap /home/user/MyDocs/.Documents/xmodmap.txt

it will sit there for a while, and it may seem like it's not doing anything, but the processor is actually plugging away remapping your keys. if it doesn't work, try editing xmodmap.txt with Notes to your liking.

warning: i pulled that german keyboard layout from a random site i found with a quick google search. so i can't guarantee it'll work, but it should get you on the right track, at least.
