I can't find a way to "compact this folder" or "expunge" in the default email program on the latest version of Diablo. Without this, deleted emails don't really go away, they remain in the ~/.modest directory, using up disk space.

Is this feature really missing?

i suspect its more a bug, and one that i have made a report on. never seen any activity on it tho...

The bug that you reported seems to be different. For the problem here, the modest UI works correctly: emails disappear when they are deleted. The problem is that they still take up space in the ~/.modest directory. You would never know unless you looked in the directory.

IMAP mail readers need to have a "compact this folder" selection to clean up the space. This is missing from modest.

i suspect they are related. if the files where properly deleted, there would be nowhere for modest "resurrect" the mails from.

seen that, problem is that its fiendishly hard to trigger on purpose.

Why IMAP only?

I use POP3 and still only after reading this I found that ~/.modest takes up 41.3MB of valuable space - after I deleted all my mails.
A second look reveals that 41.2MB are taken by ~/.modest/cache/mail/pop

The bug report referred to in this thread doesn't seem to cover the issue. Would it be wiser now to open a new bug or to delete all 41MB of waste first and see if it still happens with the latest SSU installed?
