Hey everybody!

I was using Expense Diary from palmgear.com after I downloaded GarnetVM(which works great on my N810). When I went to purchase it they asked me for my HotSync ID. I have never ever ever performed a hotsync before. This is the first tablet of anykind I have ever bought so I have no knowledge of palm and it's software. Can someone give me a complete rundown of the steps needed to get my hotsync ID? I am using my laptop(vista) and I am on my NetGear wireless router here at home. I am totally illiterate with this. Thanks for all your help!

Palm's are designed to be synced with a computer. You install an application on the computer (Palm Desktop, available here) and set up one or more profiles. Each profile has an ID, and when you sync your palm to your computer, you're asked which profile to sync to.

In this case, presumably the installation sets up some part of that sync for you, so it wants to know which profile to sync to. If you're just using the program on your tablet, and not planning to sync to a computer, you can put anything you want. Probably you should make a note of what you put in case, in the future, you decide to set up your computer to sync with your "Palm" (actually GVM running on your tablet). You can always later on create a Palm profile (in Palm Desktop on your computer) that matches whatever you put for hotsync ID.

Does that help?

Yeah, i'm STARTING to understand. Ok, I did download the palm desktop and got it to sync with my N810, BUT it never finishes syncing. It always end's in a connection failure or something.

All I have done in GVM is put the ip address of my computer in the window when I click hotsync in the GVM main window. So i'm still confused as to how to find my hotsync ID. When I open Expense Dictionary and click on "register" it brings up hotsync which is blank and I can't enter a name into it and below that is the boxes to enter the registration code. I told palmgear.com when I purchased that my hotsync ID is josh. So how do I tell GVM that my hotsync is josh? Thanks a lot for taking the time to help this poor loser out!!!

OK, you're getting there.

In Palm Desktop did you set up a profile named "josh"?

If so, the next thing is to make sure that the Hotsync Manager is running on your computer (there should be a listing for it in the same folder as Palm Desktop).

If so, the next thing to check is to make sure that Network Sync is turned on, as that is what GVM uses. Right click on the Hotsync icon in your system tray (lower right corner of your computer window). Select setup. Go to the Network tab. You should see a checkbox marked "josh". Check it. Also, click the TCP/IP settings button and it will show the ip address of your computer for the purposes of network hotsync. It's probably the same number that you told GVM to use, but double check that.

In general, all the setup is on your computer, not in GVM. Once you provide the IP address and click sync, you should see a window pop up on your computer saying it's syncing. My guess is that once you sync successfully you'll see "josh" listed for hotsync id.

If you get that far, and then the sync fails, check the logs (right click on the Hotsync icon in the system tray and go to View Log) and post any error messages here. I'll do my best to help. At that point, though, you may be better off finding a Palm forum, since what you're doing should not be any different than doing a network sync with any Palm.

-- Backing up db SFTypeAheadFieldAdorner to file C:\Program Files\palmOne\josh0\Backup\SFTypeAheadFieldAdorner .PRC
-- Backing up db SFE_SpinControl to file C:\Program Files\palmOne\josh0\Backup\SFE_SpinControl.PRC
-- Backing up db SFE_SFRecordUtils to file C:\Program Files\palmOne\josh0\Backup\SFE_SFRecordUtils.PRC

HotSync operation complete 01/27/09 10:18:24

So when try to register my product it shows HotSync Username:

Registration Code:

Now my Hotsync Username is not shown, nor is there any other name, it's just blank and I can't create name either. But I can put in my registration code. Thanks for helping me.

Also, can you give me the link to a good palm forum

You might try Brighthand's "Palm General" forum. Brighthand also has a "Nokia N800 and N810 Internet Tablets" sub-forum.

You can certainly try the palm.com forums.

The log looks like it was doing fine for a while, and then... failed. Hard to say why.

I know that some folks have had better luck synchronizing over an "ad hoc" wireless connection than a regular wireless network. (Briefly, in your wireless setup you click "add new" and check "this is a computer-to-computer connection". This assumes your computer has a wireless card, of course.)

Another thing I've had some success with is right-clicking the Hotsync Manager, selecting Custom, and going through the list of conduits. For each one, you can click "change" and set it to "do nothing'. Try doing this for all the ones you don't care about, and maybe you can figure out (and temporarily bypass) the one that's causing the failure. Sometimes if you can successfully complete the sync, the problem conduit works OK when you re-enable it.

Hope this helps.
