Hi all... Been lurking for 3 days and waiting for my tablet.. should be here by Friday hopefully...

So I just moved from my 15" mbp to a dellmini9 running OSX and realized that now the books I read are heavier than my laptop... Thought Kindle2 might be the answer but then stumbled onto this forum about the Nokia N810... Love Nokia had an N95 which I lost now have an e71..

So just a few questions while I wait... Found a demo openbox on Amazon for 209 shipped.. Was going to order new, but everywhere I called said no idea of availability. Walked over to the Nokia Store in NYC that had it on sale for 259 and a salesperson I have known for a while said she honestly didn't think they were getting any more for a while... So Either way I will have it tomorrow...

I am on Tmobile (yeh I know, but I hate ATT and my e71 doesn't do 3g on Tmos frequency). So Tethering for edge is pointless. I have a cradlepoint 3g router with a sprint card which I have always powered on in my bag in the office to bypass proxy and then plugged into the car when I'm out an about. So that should be enough for wireless connections.

Here is what I want to do.. Pardon the noob questions. Looking to use it as BookReader, Taking Notes in meetings, surfing the web in the car, Managing a few systems and pretty much a mini to my mini.

What software should I look into? I want to install Ubuntu but as per the Jaunty thread I will hold off until its more stable.

1. FBreader
2. Xjournal
3. Carman (thinking about it, I have an OBD2 reader already so not sure if I want to lay out the coin for a BT Reciever)
4. Canola

Anything else do people recommend?? Anyway to sync it with Google Calendar? Contact syncing would be cool, but I don't see writing a lot of e-mails with it outside of pulling up gmail in the browser every so often. Push mail on the e71 owns me...

Welcome to the forum, secgeek!

By all means explore the Maemo applications before you start getting into Ubuntu. I recommend that you play with Maemo Mapper...

Regards,
Roger

not 100% sure this is inside the scope of your question, but i definitely recommend flashing the tablet with the newest OS (2008.43-7). also, try Tear, an alternative web browser that uses webkit and has kinetic scrolling. many say it's a lot faster than the built-in browser. i'm not convinced, but i use it anyway cuz kinetic scrolling is fun.

Once you started the OS you'll see an intro how to use the device, and you also see a button OS2008. This contains Nokia-endorsed software. Do you get a N800 or N810? First you should upgrade to Diablo firmware. There is tons of software available in the Extras repository. Check out the wiki on http://wiki.maemo.org for howto to do both of that... if you have more specific questions do not hesitate to search and/or ask!

I would stick with the E71 for email and calendar to be honest. I have the N810 and and N78 combo and even though the n78 doesn't have a qwerty I still use it for email more than my N810 This is because Modest the default mail client in Diablo will crash your N810 desktop whenever you set it to sync automatically.

If you really want to use a calendar I would use the GPE calendar and sync with google using erminig. There is plenty of information on how to do that on the forum.

I would also suggest a bluetooth keyboard for typing notes. I use the full version of open office writer on my tablet to take notes and can actually take notes and at the same time use the maemo recorder to record meetings.

Liqbase is a great little toy for scratching memos with a stylus, it starts extremely quickly which is awesome.

Thats cool. The N800 has its own positive sides too though. For example 2 SD card slots. Its just a matter of + and -. Got the N810 as well and I love having a keyboard too just like with Nokia E71. But the N810 internal GPS is not worth it. You can export your Nokia E71 GPS with ExtGPS (found on JoikuSpot website). This GPS is much better... I got a Nokia N810 and Nokia E71 as well. The Nokia E71 calendar is very good though. And it can sync with your Mac's iCal easily.

Wow... thanks for all the great info... Anything that will sync google calendar will work for me... I found this awesome software for the e71 called SystemSeven which does pushmail for all my gmail accounts as well as syncing calendar and contact info (be forewarned if you do install it don't let it sync contact info from google to your device.. Otherwise you will have a contact for every email address you have ever sent) Had to wipe my device and resync to ical/addressbook...

I have gps in the car.. figured just something quick for when Im traveling... I use the gps on my phone with google maps but without a wifi couldnt find maps... and to top it off the island I was on mobile google maps didnt have streets..

Will OpenOffice Writer sync to anything??? I do risk mgmt and we lock everything down pretty much... I was thinking vnc to my desktop at home then use the citrix connection from there to take notes in microsoft onenote on my desktop in the office... figure its a bootleg way to do it.. But I cant carry my mini around without everyone saying oh how cute is that any pretty much annoying me... Our Company is almost stuck in the 80s... All paper based... So I figure tablet in my binder wont be noticed too much...

Definitely will look at liqbase..

Is there an emulator available that I can mess with in the meantime??? I'm sure the geek in me is coming out here My wife laughs at me when I get a new toy cause I end up spending a month learning its in and outs then get bored... hopefully this wont be the case....

Thanks again for all the great info.
