Nokia OS 1.2006.26-8 is the latest, beyond this there is no latest. Not as of yet. Now the Gaim that you got, is probably the one that could be used with the earlier OS version ( 2005). Older versions of various software are not compatible with the present Nokia OS 1.2006.26-8.
The Gaim that actually works is available here :-

There are step by step procedures, as of how to install and use it, mentioned in various Posts here in this Forum.

I posted the following on this forum once before.After installing GAIM, you need to install the specific protocol that will allow you to use GAIM with Yahoo or MSN or ICQ etc. To use MSN IM you will need ' maemo-gaim-protocol-msn '. Each kind of IM has and needs its own protocol to work. You need to download and install these for GAIM to work.
I use Yahoo IM, so I downloaded and installed :
" maemo-gaim-protocol-yahoo".
" libgpg-error0 " ,
" maemo-gaim-data ",
" libgcrypt11 ",
Hope this helps.

The problem is I cant get it installed. The verison I using is the 2006. So I go to http://maemo-hackers.org/apt/. I go to the Gaim http://maemo-hackers.org/wiki/MaemoGaim. But what do I do now. Is it possibly to link a directly link to what I need to download? Sorry Im very new at this.

Now I downloaded the things you linked to. First I installet the "libgpg-error0 " then "libgcrypt11" and then I installed http://maemo-hackers.org/apt/pool/main/m/maemo-gaim/ that one. What do I do now? Do I need " maemo-gaim-protocol-yahoo". ? Thanks for the help so far

You did not mention if you got the" maemo-gaim-data " You need that too.
Now you have to use the Application Installer of Nokia 770 to install all these in the right way and order. There is information as to how to figure this out in one of the earlier posts. Please follow that.
If you search and look up ' gaim ' in this forum and read the details within various posts as to how to configure it further it will help you a lot.
You will need to be online (WLAN or otherwise ) to use this. Depending on the IM that you want to use, you need to configure it to use your IM Id and Password etc.

As long as you have all these files in your Nokia 770, I do not think that there should be any problem. Once you have installed all these files and configured your User Id ( in your chosen IM) and Password etc. then you are all set. You may have to muck around some more with it to get it working properly. After this when you open the 'Extras' Folder, you will see ' Gaim Internet Messenger ' there. Thats it, you are done. You can now use your chosen IM ( within Gaim, depending on the protocols that you downloaded ) as you wish.
