I'm new to this arena so please hold the punches.

I've had the 770 for a while and recently got MPlayer installed. Still using the Nokia OS (2006), no access to root, etc. I can convert a small video clip, move it to the 770, and watch it there. That's easy enough.

Ideally I would like to watch movies stored on my PCs without any form of file copying. For one, there is very little space on the RS-MMC and for two, it will fit, at best, 1 or 2 movies even if I upgrade to a GB-size card.

What is the proper way to setup the 770 and/or the PC so I can watch the movies? They are in a variety of format at the moment, mostly Divx (AVI).

Thoughts? Comments? Link to things I should read up on? The big sticky thread is beyond my comprehension after 2 pages. Any guides available for less technical people like me?

Well, that is probably the most common use for MPlayer (converting video files, storing them on RS-MMC card and watching them locally).

If I have access to my PC, I prefer watching movies there on a large screen and without any need to convert videos I mostly use MPlayer myself when I'm far away from my PC (on my way to the office or back home in the public transport). I currently use 1GB memory card, but I'm going to upgrade it to 2GB (such cards are relatively cheap now). Some people are more experienced in watching video streamed from PC and technically MPlayer supports it.

All the most relevant stuff is at the last pages of that topic, early posts are outdated already.

I have had some success transcoding & streaming video using mplayer on the Nokia 770 via the TVersity Media Server running on my XP PC. I have similar goals as yourself wishing to stream any AV from the Internet and my Network to my Nokia 770 wherever I may be.

I was working on a TVersity profile.xml for the Nokia 770 which would ensure playback, unfortunately the different players that can be installed on the Nokia complicate things and so its a work "stopped" in progress.
(built in A&V players, Mplayer, MediaStreamer, Canola)

I currently believe that Serge's mplayer is the best player for streaming video on the Nokia and would welcome some additional user trial and error to understand where we are now. Be aware that TVersity already supports transcoding of mutiple formats then streaming in mpeg1, mpeg2, wmv and soon mp4.

I am hopeful that the Canlo team will allow their GUI to select the underlying player based on config settings where my current thoughts on most all round workable solution are TVersity on PC, Canola & mplayer on Nokia. (Hamachi to create Secure VPN when connecting to home PC from anywhere in World)

I have been posting my thoughts in this and the TVersity forum http://forums.tversity.com/viewforum.php?f=21 so searching on Nokia 770 and mplayer will provide more information.

PS I am away from home until New Year otherwise I would try to provide more details
