ossipena started a Wiki page for newcomers to Maemo at:

http://wiki.maemo.org/New_users

I'm starting this thread to ask for suggestions as to what could/should be added to the Wiki (if anything).

Currently the topics are:

* 1 What is maemo?
* 2 Where can I find maemo?
* 3 What can I do with maemo?
* 4 What next?

The last directs people to other areas of the general Wiki like FAQs. Do any of you fellow n00bs see a topic (or subtopics) that should be added?

Also, if anyone, n00 or 0ld, can help flesh it out, have at it.

I have capitalized all your Maemo references in the wiki. Maemo is a name, and as such spelled with a capital M. Only when you're referring to the site (maemo.org, talk.maemo.org etc.) it is written with m.

thanks for putting together this page!

Topics missing:

What's the difference between the different versions? Which version will I get if I buy [insert hardware here]?

What applications run on which version of Maemo?

What should I do if I want to suggest an application?

Why would someone choose Maemo? (What are the benefits of Open Source?)

So this is nokia's iPhone, right? (Sorry ! I couldn't resist!)

I think most new users will visit it to learn about her new device. So I think the content should be laid out to follow their (general) discovery process.. I think it may be something like so:

1. What is maemo (very brief)
2. Getting started with Maemo
.a) Basic overview
.b) Getting more apps
.c) Getting help
3. Maemo tips and tricks
4. Introducing maemo community

Going to disagree: I think most new users will visit to decide whether to buy... they saw someone with a device, heard about it, saw an advert. They want to know more, just in case, before they buy whatever the guy in carphone warehouse suggested,

i think we should take in count both possibilities: a) noob who just bought internet tablet and b) somebody who just is interested about maemo (os/devices)

e: sorry i'm very bad at capital letters @ english

Hmm, in that case, maybe the title should be changed.

"New Users" imply that they're already in possession of a Maemo based device. Pre-sales information are usually conveyed in marketing materials..

you're right. i came up the title first, and after that idea formed further.

it is nice to see that my idea was noticed. RevdKathy made so many good points that I saw a urge for something like this that has all info needed in one page and written in language that Joe Average understands fully.

I don't think we should get to much into the pre-purchase decision. Remember, the consumer isn't buying Maemo, they're buying the N900 and they will research at a site like:

http://www.nokia.co.uk/find-products...nes/nokia-n900

If the want to explore Maemo, they will probably click on the link on that page which gets them to:

http://maemo.nokia.com/

I would see maemo.org primarily as a destination for those who already purchased an N900 (or N8x0). I would see the new user Wiki page as more of a "what can I do at maemo.org?" Marketing, if any, should be focused on answering the question "why would I ever come back?"
