Hi,

Is Meamo only available on Nokia, or do you have a O/S which i can flash on to HTC Universal.

I thought of posting this on XDA Developers then thought it would be ideal to test.

if you could post from where i could get hold of a link from where i can dlowload for a HTC universal that would be excellllllent.

TTTTTTTThank you.

Kind Regards
Vinay

I will try to guess.

There are rumors that the upcoming version of Maemo won't even work on a phone to be released this year.

So I tend to say no.

Probably not officially, but the Mer team might be able to support those models in the future. Search these forums and the Wiki for Mer.

Harmattan hasn't been released. This question belongs perhaps to General, can someone move it there please?

The Maemo platform is mostly made of standard Linux and open source components. No ide* about the technical challenges of running such software in other mobile devices, though.

IMHO it's a lost case like IBM's OS/2.

HTC and all other hardware vendors will do everything possible not to find themselves in a position where they depend on an OS of their direct competitor. So as long as Nokia builds hardware no other vendor will bet their survival on Maemo. Linux variants like Android for example of course are completely different matter...

I would guess that since there most mobile devices today share fair amount of hardware, it should be possible

E.g. iphone 3gs, palm pre and n900 use probably the same basic parts - cpu, vga, power management... And, afaik, the snapdragon architecture uses very similar components (though without open source drivers, this doesn't help at all..).

And nowadays, many android devices are developed - and android is basically linux core + java (well, dalvik..), so once such phone is jailbreaked, one could theoretically run any software on top of the kernel (including maemo...).. AND most of that android phones have their winmobilized hardware twins (like htc g1/hero is quite similar to many previous htc devices - see phonewreck.com ), on which the linux could then be ran too...

soooo... if the hardware of phone is powerful enough, it shouldn't be that problem to start maemo on it...

however...

the question is, if all components will be usable - quite a few of maemo core components are closed source (yet), so we can't know for sure, what will they do on non-nokia hardware.. So one could also end up like with e.g. the android port for HTC Wizard - no phone functionality, just framebuffer and android environment...

I think htc universal, once top-of-it's-class, is now (just like wizard) very underpowered, when it comes to cpu, graphics and ram, to run maemo (well, maybe it could run 2008 - which doesn't allow you to use the phone part)..

i guess maemo port would be interesting (and more useful) for phones like htc touch hd or htc leo.. 3 years old phones are now, unfortunately, quite... old... imho
