I just tried the following command in the scratchbox:

fakeroot apt-get install vim

and

fakeroot apt-get install vi

Neither of them was found. I am surprised. Do I need to enable other repositories?

Which device/OS are you using? Maemo 5 has a port of emacs and Vim in extras-devel, I believe.

I am currently using the Maemo 5 SDK until I get my N900. I just found vim in the Downloads section of this site.

http://maemo.org/downloads/OS2008/text-editors/

Can someone tell me how to install it?

Did you try typing vi in a terminal? Older tablets had a simple version of vi without installing anything.

Yes, and it didn't work.

It's apparently on the device but maybe (n)vi is missing from the SDK's busybox

There's no busybox installed in scratchbox, but vi(m) is there:

Code:
[sbox-FREMANTLE_X86: ~] > which vim
/scratchbox/tools/bin/vim

In Scratchbox, there's vim provided. On the device, there is vim for both OS2008 and Maemo 5:

http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/vim/
and http://maemo.org/packages/view/vim/

The one for Maemo 5 is currently on its way into extras-testing, so should be viewed with caution.
