You might start the app from xterm and look at stdout and stderr output:
~ $ run-standalone.sh gpe-calendar
I experience occasional crashes of gpe-calendar, too, but I am clueless. Now I deactivated one of the calendars from google that I subscribed to ("Ferien NRW"), and which looked wrong, but this is just a try.
