This is what I did,
Edit: sure, check whether there is any hardware problem.
- Plug in the battery and charge it from blinking to green
- stick in a microSD
- remove the shipping screen protector and custom fit your own, make sure the side you cut is the sticky side as it is not symmetrical, and do not cover beyond the Left border of the touch screen. There are light sensors on the Left border.

After charging and the tablet now with a steady green light on the bottom Left corner, time to play
- Follow the screen instructions to set up the tablet.

Tricks: touch Upper Right conner will go back, like an escape key

Setup wifi
- 6 blue squares on Left Upper corner>Settings>Internet connections>Connections>New; you may need the WEP key, I use BT to file transfer the key into N900 (you have to turn BT on and visible in order to do file transfer)

Setup repositories or apps
- 6 blue squares on Left Upper corner>More>App.manager>Application manager>Application catalogs>Maemo Extras uncheck disabled>Save

you have more apps here, but these are alphas and betas, so... I would like to have them
New>
Catalogue name Extras-testing
Web address http://repository.maemo.org/extras-testing
Distribution fremantle
Components free non-free
Save

Catalogue name Extras devel
Web address http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel/
Distriution
Componenets free non-free
Save

To find apps

Edit: Absolutely here, http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=37741

- 6 blue squares on Left Upper corner>More>App.manager>Download>All Here are the apps, install only if you know what you are doing

A poorman's report for app installation, all listed here

Setup Wifi file transfer between N900 and winPC
- install OpenSSH Client and Server from above "To find apps", when ask for new password for root, make a secure one and jot it down, you need the password later. Go here for a step by step instructions for N810, for N900 it is exactly the same.

VNCviewer for remote control winPC
- install vncviewer from above "To find apps"
- install tightvnc on your winPC, and run the tightvnc server and type in a password. Once tighvnc server is up, touch the icon on the task bar will show the ip (192.168.1.xxx)
- run vncviewer and type in the above ip and click connect, that is it, now you remote control your winPC; rdesktop does similar trick., step by step guide here, http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=35043, thread #14

Missing the virtual on screen keyboard, you got it right, the default is disabled, so you have to set it to use it, interesting.
- 6 blue squares on Left Upper corner>Settings>Text input, check "Use virtual keyboard"

Ovi maps 1.01
step by step installation and its use, http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=38872

GPS problems?
Fixed, somewhat - 8 blue squares on Left Upper corner>Settings>locations> scroll to bottom and replace "supl.nokia.com" with "supl.google.com:7276"; for details, http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...843#post429843, thread #14

I think the first thing to do is:

1. Check if the N900 is turn on.
2. Check if there is no dead pixel
3. Check if the microphone working by calling someone.
4. Check if the battery is charging
5. Check if the Wifi is working
6. Check if there is light leakage from X, C keys

then do what you did

7. Check if the Device is running smoothly or slow. If it is slow and freeze or restart alot then it might have a hardware failure. Else try reflashing it. If it doesn't fix then send it back to NOKIA. :-)

I still haven't got mine yet but my brother in law opened the box before he sent it to me. The vibration work. lol I'm going to wait until friday.

There shouldn't be this much of checks upon arrival..unfortunately we have to because those Koreans made terrible assembly due to pressure getting these babies to us early

just received mine 2 days ago, it seems that everything is fine except the 3.5mm jack. whatever headphones i connect to it are not recognised and the sounds are still played via phone speakers. and the random reboots problem is bugging me too. I hope these problems are not caused by defective hardware and hope they can be fixed in the next update, since it is quite costly and troublesome for me to send it back to US....

Maxismus cool, have you got yours? does yours have these kind of problems?

And if there is a dead pixel, what do you do then? Flip out? Then what?

The last small upgrade, did not erase anything, I followed the instruction, and successfully upgraded to 1.2009.44-1 without changing any of my settings and programs. Anyhow, I always did a backup before that. And this upgrade was OTA.

I tried to the same upgrade for 1.2009.51-1. It said, this upgrade you have to use USB cable upgrade from your PC suite.
I followed the instructions, and upgraded via PC suite, again, it warned for a backup, I did a backup anyhow.
The whole backup takes less than 5 min from begin to end. And this time, it wipes out everything. Everything, your N900 started from scratch.

I re-inserted my wifi keys, and added the two repos, Extras-devel and Extras-testing, and restored from my backup. It did restore almost everything, except a few programs, GVM, I have to install manually. I wonder would it wipes out everything if I upgrade OTA, just curious
