I've compiled GNU Emacs 23.1

It's not hildonized, just regular Emacs, now when started, I have the N900 bar on top of the screen.

How do I switch to fullscreen when in Emacs now?

The application, ie. Emacs, has to support it. There is no global shortcut for that in Fremantle.

So no go without hildonization?

What's the background behind Maemo, GPE? blackbox?

Surely the WM that runs the GTK frontend for Maemo can display fullscreen, so I'd think there should be some command or what have you to switch the view of the app to fullscreen and back, no?

GNU Emacs supports fullscreen mode, when started as emacs -fs

In fact in this way, it'll even cover over Gnome toolbars and everything. So why is this not happening in Maemo on the N900?

I don't know, but seeing as you are trying to port emacs, you might want to post in the Development forum and see if anyone can help there.

It's the "hildon-desktop" and it is open source, so adding a shortcut for fullscreen to it shouldn't be too hard.

But generally in Maemo applications have to request it specifically. I don't know how it works exactly, but it shouldn't be that hard either. I.e. hex-a-hop is a straight-forward port that runs in fullscreen and isn't using Gtk or Hildon.

I would like to know this as well. I have compiled xevil for the N900 however without full screen its not going to play. This is the kind of documentation that is severely lacking for the maemo platform
