I was very surprised today to read this comment in bugzilla (regarding OGG Vorbis support out of the box):

from Quim Gil (Nokia):

I'm happy to resolve this old request as FIXED. The Harmattan plans include Ogg
Vorbis support and you can follow the progress at
http://maemo.gitorious.org/maemo-multimedia
What's going on here? Nokia and OGG Vorbis? Am I the only one who rememers Nokia's fear of submarine patents in this codec? What will we see next?

Anyway, makes me happy. Because the bug's fixed for Maemo... and because Nokia seems to have changed its mind on OGG Vorbis. (Just wait, next time you switch on a Maemo device, the Nokia hands animation will be a Theora file...)

Wow, it's actually very surprising to hear something like that from Nokia.

I find it weird it won't just be integrated into Maemo 5...Kinda weird to have to wait for a new OS for some new feature

"Fixed in Harmattan"

Now doesn't that sound somewhat familiar?

It's a good example that year-long pressure on a bug report will finally lead to a progress in a big company like Nokia. I would've never thought that this could happen with Ogg Vorbis support.

They must have solved all the legal issues. I'd like to know on which basis - this is useful to the whole floss world.

Actually, what I'd like to see, is some kind of dsp task that could be used in the N8X0. Current vorbis decoding throught cpu sucks.

Yes.

OTOH, how much use would a "fixed in Fremantle/PR1.2" be if we already have Ogg Vorbis support via Extras?

My N900 already has Ogg Vorbis support now and Nokia including it in an upcoming version of Fremantle wouldn't improve anything for me. - So in this particular case, "Fixed in Harmattan" is really the only option. For Fremantle I'd consider it a waste of resources.
