I just have to ask about the new shiny N800. Thinking seriously about getting one.

On both my previous 770 (wich I sent back) there was the iiiiiiiiiii:ing sound from the screen when screenlight was on other setting than max. Is that still there in the N800? It wasn't loud but anoying when lying in bed at night reading and everything around was dead quiet.

One other issue was the audible storm in the headphones....even when not playing anything. Is it still there? Similarly as with the sound from the screen it went away when master-volume was set on maximum. But that was just a way around the problem.

The N800 is quiet or ......?

Can add that both my 770 was made in Germany.

/Thomas

My 770 exhibits exactly the same behaviour. I am interested in the answer too.

A high-pitch sound is quite common from LCD displays of hand-held devices. I've heard a lot about such noises from e.g. Palm devices. When I got my first T3 I checked for noise by holding the screen very close to my ear. It was completely silent - no noise. But then I checked again with the youngest member of the staff here.. she was around 20 years old (at that time), and she told me she could hear a high-pitched tone quite well, from a meter away. But I'm more than 20 years older.. can't hear those high frequencies anymore, which is fine with me :-)

Another "older guy" data point here. N800 at max brightness, right next to my ear, is blissfully silent. Ditto with the noise floor through earbuds. I don't have a 770 for comparison.

Have the N800 and have the same problem but i can only hear it when sound is on the lowest (off). I am 28 years old. I hear it in bed when everything else is real quiet.

OP, I had the same issue with the 770, although it didn't start until after having had the device several months. I'm now with an N800 and am not experiencing the noise (yet).

FWIW, I cant hear any sound from either my 770 or my N800. I'm over 40, but my hears were checked and are reasonably good. I can still hear the whistling 15 KHz sound from TV sets.
