When the intervals use the followin (5,10,15,30 miutes), the client will update alway in every 5,10,15,30 minutes!
But it does not work when you use 1 or 2 hours for update intervals.
There is no problem with the delivery at gmail, for me, it is always worked for me.

Given that GMail is IMAP, and you should receive messages almost as soon as its sent, and people are having problems "on other systems where it works that way by default", its an issue that should be looked into further. My (1) hour interval polls are working correctly for my Gmail account.
However if you choose to follow your current path, try deleting, and then recreating your Gmail account on the 900.

I use Gmail accounts, and when I set the update intervals to 1 or 2 hours, it wont check the accounts in every 1 or 2 hours, there are half or a whole day delay between 2 synchronizations!
I have wifi/pocket data connection always online, wifi checks the availability in every 10 minutes.
