I am interested in working with anyone who is interested in helping. I am not sure of the legalities of this? Maybe it could be done through maemo.org where you have to provide your wlan mac to download. I do not want to distribute a flash image, I want to distribute a ext2 partition image to be used in conjnction with bootmenu, I would also want to provide tools (simple scripts) for non technical people to run. A way to make booting off your mmc easy, and a way to distribute the OS with some additional software additional kernel modules, perhaps alternate kernel also, all the sources setup. Just be able to open Application Manager and install wworking software, with no dep issues. Even if this means we create our own repository and test everything before we promote it to our OS. I also want to create a full backup utility, to backup to alternate mmc card. We as a community need to make this easier for the non tech users, this will ensure a hardware platform for the future.

Thoughts Ideas ??? I want to hear what you all think.....

To be honest, I only registered to this forum in order to encourage you to realize your plans mentioned in your post. When I decided to buy the N800, I started to browse the internet for information about software for this new device. So I came across this forum and after reading some threads, I was about to cancel my order...

Things like "when I started my N800 this morning the WSOD appears..." or instructions how to install software (talking about different Linux commands and "repositories") made me feel that my decision was wrong: this is not a user-friendly device with loads of software available free of charge and easy to use, but a gadget for "geeks" spending hours on it in order to run programs smoothly.

Well, in the meantime I learned that the "white screen of death" is NOT an expression taken from "The Lord of the Rings" and it is mainly a problem for the 770. But for the group of average PC users (and I belong to this group) who never got in touch with Linux and who is used to press the "install" button for new software, its really a challenge to deal with repositories and stuff. Especially when English is not your first language.

Of course the device has a base functionality and if you are happy with it you donīt really need to dig into Linux. But as penguinbait mentioned: the continuation of this hardware platform depends on the sales figures of this device in the first instance and the more it offers to "average" customers the higher the chance that it will be further developed.

I will receive my N800 by the mid of next week and hopefully I will not bother this forum to much with my newbie questions

PP: Please accept my apologies for my bumpy english.
