image quality depends on hardware and firmware version?
well I just updated last night I have the ovi store I'm happy about that.
but not happy with the lack of quality! TV out is ok but why couldn't it be great? 5mp is nice but why not great,
don't get me wrong I'm still happy as hell with my n900 but for some odd reason
I"m getting "Da Ja Vue" of the my n800 with every firmware upgrade, in the back of my mind I know its only so much
an update can do, and it will happened again I will have to buy the n910

sigh. its been explained plenty of times that the main firmware update is coming, and that that one is no more than a stepping stone.
also i dont believe the driver for the front-facing camera have been release, hence the bad quality u see.
tv out is only sd quality-what can you expect
and the camera is fine to me..so long as you have enough light..

It's "Déjà vu", and second, did you really expect a software upgrade to modify the hardware capabilities?

Yes, I had to put in that comment as people thought the image is bad because Mirror doesn't "know" what to do (when in fact it just 'taps' in the video stream). The hardware part is I think apparent. The firmware is listed as some firmwares are know to have issues (a dark band on the right). Apparently, people with PR1.1 say the image quality (grainyness) is not better (but the dark band is gone).

The front camera is pretty crappy, found some spec saying it is VGA. That means roundabout 0.3 MP, not 5MP! The real camera is 5MP but located on the other side though, and very good for a phone. So don't worry.

The front camera does need good light conditions to be useful at all, and then it makes for an ok-ish webcam when the band will be removed with the firmware. Try mirror in broad daylight.

the front camera is a VGA camera so its suppose to be bad quality, but not that bad. On all the other N-Series the front camera is a lot better and clear, but with the mirror app is a lot worse, and almost impossible to see. So it must be a software problem, I agree with alexreed88, it must be a driver issue. But even after the fix, dont expect 5mp quality photos as its still only a vga

I'm a bit concerned that this isn't able to be fixed with a firmware update. Will early adopters be allowed to swap handsets with ones with usable 0.3MP front cams if it's not firmware?

Currently there is no incentive for Fring to repeat their great work on the N97 with full video chat over IP if it's this bad. I'll have to try and compile wengophone or ekiga
