I have received an email with a bmp file attachment, and get unsupported file format trying to open it.

Is this a bug or does the n900 really not support standard file formats?

If you get bmp's via email I would probably put the sender on blacklist. Standard file formats now-a-days are: jpg, png, svg, maybe gif... but certainly not bmp...

Maybe the browser might be capable of opening it but not really sure about it.

i'm not at home ATM so I can't try, but forum nokia lists the following image formats for the N900:
BMP, GIF87a, GIF89a, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WBMP, WMF
so you're right to expect BMP-support on your device.

can you save the attachment and try to open it from the file manager?

Attachments saves ok.
Thumbnail displayed correctly in file manager. Click on file gives

Unable to open
File format not supported.

Interesting. If it's not too confidential, can you upload it somewhere and maybe people can take a look at it? Maybe it's semi-corrupted.

MicroB opens it fine. Seems Image Viewer doesn't support bmp.
